SERVICES

CHILDREN & FAMILIES MENTAL HEALTH
The Children and Families Mental Health service is funded by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Adult Social Care. The service offers individual support for Arabic-speaking women who suffer from enduring mental health problems and live in the borough.

Women experiencing mental health problems often find their difficulties impact on all aspects of their daily life. Those from Arabic-speaking communities can also find themselves very isolated, due to the stigma which still exists in these communities in regard to mental ill-health. This can make it particularly difficult for women to ask for help and access the services which can support them.

Our service provides practical and emotional support for both the women and their families. A programme of advice, advocacy and referral helps the women to deal with their practical problems and access mainstream NHS services.

As part of the service we also run a programme of parenting classes, working with a bilingual social worker and psychotherapist. The classes support the women in their role as mothers and raise awareness with regard to safeguarding children's emotional and psychological well-being. The project leader is a trained and accredited facilitator of the Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities Parenting Programme.

Women and children with particular needs, who live in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, can also be referred to the Arabic Families Service at Parkside Clinic, where they will be assessed for their suitability for a course of counselling or therapy. The clinic is a mainstream mental health service provider which supports an Islamic counsellor and community mental health team. The Arabic Families Service works with English-speaking Muslim families and children and Arabic-speaking families and children of any faith.
